The population of Africa is growing rapidly and expected to double by 2050. Sustainable development across the globe hinges on the African continent; urgently needed are highly skilled engineers with leadership ambitions to spearhead sustainable patterns of social and economic development in their country.

This has inspired ETH Zurich to work hand in hand with Ashesi University in Ghana to set up a new Master’s degree programme in Mechatronic. The target group are highly talented young students from Africa. The aim is to establish long-lasting structures so that Ashesi University can go on offering the programme independently after the first joint phase.

Lecturers and professors from Ashesi University and ETH will teach in tandem, allowing each institution to benefit from the didactic and cultural characteristics of the other.

Beside other partners such as foundations and private persons global enterprises operating in Africa are involved. They will help tailor the curriculum to local needs and facilitate the students’ transition into employment by offering e.g. internships.

Since 2014, Tarbaca Indigo Foundation has been supporting the Excellence Scholarship & Opportunity Program of ETH Zurich. The program sponsors students with excellent degrees from all over the world wishing to pursue their Master's degree at ETH Zurich. The scholarship covers the full study and living costs and enables financially underprivileged students from all over the world to study at the renowned university. Tarbaca Indigo Foundation's donations are earmarked for students from Central American countries and developing countries. Since 2014, Tarbaca Indigo Foundation has enabled one or two young scientists per year to pursue their Master's degree at ETH Zurich.

The Strategic Fund of ETH Zurich Foundation enables ETH Zurich to explore new, often visionary alleys and to pioneer bold ideas. The Fund contains donations that are not committed to a certain initiative or purpose, allowing ETH Zurich to spend these funds in a flexible manner.
