Restoration of Alberto Giacometti's Plasters
Between 2010 and 2014 the Kunsthaus Zürich investigated and restored seventy-five plasters of Alberto Giacometti, including some masterpieces that were never cast in bronze. Alberto Giacometti (1901–1966) is one of the leading artists of the 20th century. He created a seminal body of work, primarily as a sculptor but also as a painter and draughtsman. The seventy-five precious original plasters from Alberto Giacometti's estate came to Kunsthaus Zürich as a permanent loan in 2006 as a result of a gift from Giacometti's youngest brother, Bruno Giacometti, and his wife Odette to the Alberto Giacometti-Stiftung in Zurich. In an unprecedented art technological undertaking of international scope the plasters were investigated and restored over a period of four years. This led to an enormous increase in the understanding of how Alberto Giacometti worked. The project culminated in the exhibition "Alberto Giacometti - Beyond Bronze. Masterworks in Plaster and Other Materials", which presented the plasters in their entirety for the first time. The project was financed almost completely by three foundations including Tarbaca Indigo Foundation.
